Building a Platform to Support Social Innovation at Scale
The Challenge
Replacing one-off campaign sites with a reusable global platform.
Google.org's Impact Challenge supports nonprofits and social enterprises tackling important social and environmental issues around the world.
As the programme expanded, Google needed more than a series of standalone campaign websites. It needed a single platform that could support multiple challenges across countries, regions and cities, while allowing each initiative to reflect its own local content, language and launch schedule.
The platform also needed to support different stages of each challenge, including applications, public voting where required, and winner announcements, whilst handling significant traffic spikes, maintaining accessibility standards and avoiding additional operational complexity.

Our Approach
Designing a platform that could evolve with the programme.
Rather than treating every Impact Challenge as a separate project, we designed a reusable framework capable of supporting different countries, languages, content requirements and launch schedules from a single platform.
We focused on reducing operational risk by automating key stages of each challenge, allowing initiatives to move seamlessly between applications, public voting and winner announcements without manual intervention.
Accessibility and localisation were built into the platform from the outset, alongside tools to support voting integrity where public voting formed part of a challenge. The framework supports multilingual content, translation workflows and anonymised voting-pattern analysis, allowing Google to launch high-profile initiatives confidently while maintaining a consistent user experience.

The Solution
A reusable platform for multilingual public engagement.
Psycle developed a reusable Google Cloud platform that supports the complete public lifecycle of Google.org Impact Challenge initiatives.
The platform provides multilingual content management, automated challenge lifecycle management, public voting where required and winner announcements, all delivered from a single reusable codebase.
Built using Google Cloud Platform, Python and Google’s internal Glue system, it automatically scales to handle the significant traffic spikes generated by high-profile Google homepage promotions, while maintaining accessibility, privacy and compliance across every launch.
Technology included

More than a decade after its initial launch, the platform continues to support new Google.org Impact Challenge initiatives, demonstrating the value of investing in reusable digital foundations.

The Outcome
